Overview

Everest Base Camp is the trek most people dream about first, and it deserves its reputation. Fifteen days take you from the Lukla airstrip through Sherpa villages, past Tengboche’s monastery and up the Khumbu Glacier to the foot of the world’s highest mountain.

We walk it at the pace altitude asks for, with two full acclimatisation days, a guide who checks your oxygen saturation every evening, and teahouses we know by name.

  • Sunrise on Everest from Kala Patthar, 5,545 m
  • Morning prayers at Tengboche Monastery
  • Two acclimatisation days, at Namche and Dingboche
  • Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa capital
  • The Lukla mountain flight
  • Groups of ten or fewer

Is this trek for you?

  • Your first high-altitude trek, or your first trek in Nepal
  • Comfortable walking 5 to 7 hours a day, several days in a row
  • Happy with simple, warm teahouse rooms above Namche
On this trek, responsiblyPorters carry 15 kg at most and every bag is weighed at Lukla. Your guide grew up in the Khumbu. Teahouses are booked directly with the families who run them.

Route and altitude

Numbered pins are where you sleep each night. Orange circles are side climbs and high points. Tap a pin to read that day.

The gap between the orange circles and the line is "climb high, sleep low" at work: on acclimatisation days you walk up, then come back down to sleep.

Questions about this trek

What if the Lukla flight is cancelled?

Weather cancels flights most seasons. We rebook you on the first flight out, and can arrange a shared helicopter at extra cost if a flight is badly delayed. Adding a spare day at the end of your trip is the simplest protection.

How hard is it?

It is long more than technical: 5 to 8 hours of walking most days on good trails, at altitude. If you can hike all day on a weekend and do it again the next morning, you can train for this.

Can I do it without the Lukla flight?

Yes. Our Everest Base Camp via Phaplu route walks in from the Solu foothills and adds four days.

Is there a quieter way to see Everest?

Gokyo Lakes, Ama Dablam Base Camp and Pikey Peak all see Everest with far fewer people on the trail.
