Overview

Upper Mustang was the Kingdom of Lo, closed to outsiders until 1992. North of the Annapurnas the land turns dry and wind-carved: red and ochre cliffs pitted with ancient caves, villages of whitewashed mud brick, barley fields and long mani walls, and at the end the walled city of Lo Manthang with its fifteenth-century monasteries.

The walking is moderate and never very high, between about 2,800 and 4,300 m, but the days are long and windy. The region sits in the Himalaya’s rain shadow, so it is one of the few treks that works in the monsoon. A special permit and a licensed guide are required, and we arrange both.

  • Lo Manthang, the walled capital of the old Kingdom of Lo
  • Fifteenth-century monasteries and their wall paintings
  • Cliff caves at Chhoser and the red cliffs of Dhakmar
  • Ghar Gompa, said to be one of the oldest monasteries in Nepal
  • One of Nepal's longest mani walls, near Ghami
  • Good walking in the monsoon, when most of Nepal is wet

Is this trek for you?

  • Travellers who care more about culture and landscape than high peaks
  • Walking 5 to 7 hours a day in wind and strong sun
  • Happy with simple, family-run lodges
  • Groups of two or more: the permit requires it, and solo travellers can join a small group
On this trek, responsiblyWe stay in lodges run by Loba families and visit monasteries with a local guide who can explain what you are seeing. Please ask before photographing people or inside monasteries.

The gap between the orange circles and the line is "climb high, sleep low" at work: on acclimatisation days you walk up, then come back down to sleep.

Questions about this trek

Why is the permit so expensive?

The government sets the restricted area fee, currently USD 500 for the first ten days and USD 50 for each extra day. It is included in our price, and part of it is meant to go back to the region.

Can I go in the monsoon?

Yes. Upper Mustang gets very little rain, so June to August is a good time, as long as the flights to Jomsom are running. Spring and autumn are also excellent.

Is there a road now?

Yes, a jeep road reaches Lo Manthang. Our route uses the old walking trails wherever they run apart from the road, and the road is useful as backup.

Can we see the Tiji festival?

Tiji is a three-day festival in Lo Manthang, usually in May. We plan festival departures; ask us for the dates.
